Re-modelled Adamasingba Stadium To Top Revenue, Job Generation Sources – Oyo Govt.

….As Corporate Companies Storm Stadium for Spaces, Sponsorship Deals

The re-modelled Adamasingba stadium in Ibadan has been named to be the top revenue-generating source for Oyo State Government and means of generating employment opportunities for the people of the State.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Culture and Tourism, Hon. Ademola Ige stated this on Monday, while on a tour of the facilities at the stadium alongside the Vice-Chairman, Oyo State Board of Tourism, Alhaji Abass Oloko, some members of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), led by the State Director, Mr. Dotun Opatola, Erelu Funmi Rotiba of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (Western zone), as well as the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria, among others.

The project will be commissioned by Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday, 1st September, 2021, with special matches, meant to test-run the facilities in the stadium.

Ige said sport tourism would take over from other sources of revenue generation in the State, citing the examples of notable cities around the world with standard stadia, through which they get funds for other public projects.

“This is part of the efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde to make Oyo State a tourists’ destination, so this sport tourism project is one of other areas of tourism locations in eco-tourism, natural tourism and food tourism that are well noted around the world, this stadium is situated within the heart of the capital of the State and can be easily located.

“For the past 30 years that the Lekan Salami Sports Complex has been in existence, there has been no massive turn-around or refurbishment of the stadium like we are witnessing today under the present administration and that is why we are here with the major stakeholders in the sector to look at the areas that are important in the area of tourism and promote same to the world.

“”Prior to the commencement of this project, the Governor said categorically that he has keen interest to develop tourism, to make tourism another major source of income for the State, here we are, he promised and has just delivered on his promise, this is where the State will generate better revenue to service its programmes and public facility development projects, the Stadium is going to be the one to be laying the golden eggs in revenue generation henceforth.”

The Chairman, Oyo State Sports Council, Hon. Gbenga Adewusi, in his reaction, said the re-modelling project will have a major impact on the history of Oyo State, as he noted that future generations of the State indigenes would remember the present administration for good.

He disclosed to newsmen that already, many corporate organizations and companies like Nigerian Breweries and some sport marketers have beseeched the council to request for sponsorship of programmes, events and spaces in the Stadium.

According to the representatives of National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN) and Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), major facilities like museum, V.I.P lounge, statues of past sporting heroes from the State will attract tourists that will pay for controlled access to the stadium facilities.

They alluded to the facilities found at international sporting facilities like the Nou Camp in Barcelona, Emirate Stadium and the popular Brazil stadium among others as major sources of income generation for the countries where they are situated.

National Sports Festival: Oyo athletes to receive rewards soon -Govt

…says Makinde remains committed to sport devt

Oyo State Athletes who won medals at the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival will soon receive their cash rewards soon, as the Ministry of Youth and Sports has already received the Governor’s approval for the rewards meant for the medalists.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, who made this known on Monday, added that the Governor remains committed to the promises he made when he hosted the athletes shortly after the games.

According to the statement, each of the athletes concerned would soon receive the cash rewards as promised by the Governor.

“His Excellency, the Governor has already given necessary approvals for the release of the funds and the Ministry of Youth and Sports should be in possession of the cash in a short while,” the statement read.

Governor Makinde had, while hosting the athletes after the games, promised a cash reward of N500,000 for each gold medalist; N350,000 reward for silver medalists and N250,000 reward for each bronze medal.

He had also announced that the coaches would be rewarded with N500,000 each.

The only gold medalist who competed in shotput and discus is to get an additional N1 Million, while the paralifting athlete will also be given an additional N1 Million.

Adisa maintained that the athletes will be rewarded in a short while, urging those affected not to lose confidence in the administration, which he said has shown huge commitment to welfare of the athletes.

He said: “The Governor has approved the cash rewards for the medalists and coaches in the Oyo State contingent to the Edo 2020 Sports Festival.

“Once the Ministry of Youth and Sports completes the processing, the athletes will receive their rewards.

“His Excellency made it clear while hosting the athletes that they should rest assured that they would get their due rewards. The processes are almost completed and everyone will be duly rewarded.

“It will be recalled that His Excellency pointed out how he met a 2018 file containing the unfulfilled promises made by the immediate past administration to the State’s athletes and how his Government had immediately paid the athletes involved, even when it was an inherited promise.

“Some of the athletes might have expressed worries that the processes towards the release of the funds took a bit of time, but with Governor Makinde, who has proven himself over the time as a Governor who makes and keeps his promises, such worries should not be entertained.

“The athletes should rest assured that their rewards are close to being released by the Ministry. It’s no longer a matter of long wait.

“With the level of commitment shown to sports development by Governor Makinde, the promises cannot go unfulfilled. In no time, each athlete and coach will get their rewards.”

We Are Using Sports Development to Engage Youths in Oyo – Makinde

*Pledges to make Golf Clinic annual event

…as gov, sport commissioner celebrate Oyo’s medal haul at National Sports Festival

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Saturday, said that his administration is developing sports to productively engage  youths in the State.

The Governor stated this at the presentation of awards and certificates to the winners of  the Oyo State 2021 Junior Golf Competition, to conclude a weeklong Golf Clinic organised for kids and teenagers by the Oyo State Ministry of Youth and Sports.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the Governor, while speaking at the Ibadan Golf Club, Ibadan, venue of the event, noted that the State has been creating platforms for youths to channel their energies to sports.

Governor Makinde also used the occasion to celebrate the achievement of the State, which placed 6th on the medal table of the just concluded National Sports Festival (Edo 2020) with 103 medals, commending the State’s athletes.

He equally charged the Sports Ministry to ensure that the contingent comes back with 100 Gold medals in the 2022 Festival slated for Delta State.

According to him, the State will put everything in place to further develop sports, adding that his administration has embarked on the upgrade of sporting facilities across the State in order to attract talents and to ensure that there is a programme for every child, even those who could not afford golf kits.

He added that the  administration will not relent in repositioning the development of sports in the State.

He said: “Sports development is a way that we think we can engage the youths in Oyo State and that is why we are doing everything possible to  ensure that our sporting facilities are upgraded and will attract talents to those facilities.

“Already, we can see the return on the investments we have made in sports.

“The Commissioner for Youth and Sports said that at the Nation Sports Festival, Edo 2020, Oyo State won 31 gold medals. We are just one gold medal behind Lagos, which used to be the leader in Nigeria, with Delta, Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers now ahead.

“What I noticed was that Bayelsa won a lot of medals in swimming and I called the contractor handling Adamasingba yesterday (Friday) and I said to him that he must hasten and give us an Olympic-size swimming pool at Adamasingba.

“So, Oyo State will compete favorably in swimming in the next National Sports Festival.

“Yes, we have made some improvements. In the last sports festival held in 2016, we were number 8. In this one (2020) we came out number 6. We won 18 gold medals in the previous one and in this one, we won 31. So, our target for the next sports festival is a minimum of 100 gold medals and that is going to happen within the tenure of this administration.”

Speaking on the just-concluded maiden edition of the Junior Golf Clinic, which is a brain child of Tobi Oyewumi, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports Development, the Governor said: “The SSG said all the children that came for the Golf Clinic are well-fed and I said yes, because Golf is an elitist game. But we want to have a programme for some of the children that won’t be able to afford golf clubs.

“So, this clinic is good and I won’t ask too many questions right now. But I want to say that this clinic will be a yearly affair and I look forward to seeing you next year. There will be a qualification and 30 per cent of the slots for the subsequent ones would be reserved for the disadvantaged children. We will ensure that the quota is filled, even if it means that we have to buy golf clubs for them, we will do that.

“So, I want to congratulate winners and some of you that did not win. Next year, make sure you train harder and come to the court when you have the opportunity.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede, appreciated the Governor for supporting sports activities in the State.

According to him, “I am very happy to see this come to fruition and it has happened in a grand way. I must also salute our brother, Mr Tobi Oyewumi; from the beginning of the maiden edition of this programme to the end, it has been a hitch-free one.

“I also want to appreciate the Governor for the wonderful support he is giving to the youths in the State, especially along the line of sports development. Never in the history of the State has it ever been like this. It is really a great one for us and we are privileged that, in our time, we have a Governor who is responsible and responsive.

“In addition to the on-going renovation of Lekan Salami Sport Complex, we have at least six stadia in the State, one in each geopolitical zone. This has never happened before. We believe in grassroots sport development and we look forward to seeing our young ones grow beautifully.”

Similarly, the brain behind the Golf Clinic, Mr. Oyewumi, appreciated the Governor for believing in sports development.

“Your Excellency, I want to say a big thank you sir, because you believe in this idea. Your believing in this idea is the reason you have given us,  youths, this platform in the Government of Oyo State.

He admonished the parents to encourage their wards to develop interest in sports and inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship in them.
